When the sun shines many of us head outdoors to make the most of it, grabbing the sun cream and a hat for the little ones as we go because we all know how important it is to protect our skin from the harmful UV of the sun.
Like our skin, your eyes are also delicate parts of our bodies and can easily become damaged overtime by UV, with extended exposure being linked to cataracts, macular degeneration, pingueculae, pterygium
photokeratitis and cancer. Cataracts - are a clouding of the natural lens within the eye. Macular Degeneration - is damage your central retina (inside back of the eye) called the macular.
Pingueculae- is a yellowish thickening of the white of the eye, primarily caused by ultraviolet light, so is prevalent in people working or spending a large amount of time outdoors.
Pterygium - is a pinkish fleshy growth on the conjunctiva, which is the clear tissue that lines our eyelids and eyeball. this will normally grow towards your cornea. UV is considered a cause of this, so can affect anyone spending a large amount of time outdoors with out sun protection.
Photokerititis - is 'sunburn to the eye' causing pain, sensitivity, excessive tearing and blurred vision. An extreme example of this is snow blindness
The positioning of the eye within the skull and our physical reactions to the sun, like reduced pupil size and squinting, provide limited protection from UV (which is present even on a cloudy day and is reflected off surfaces including snow, water, sand, and concrete).
The good news is that you can protect your eyes from the suns UV and reflected glare by wearing sunglasses. Always check that your sunglasses protect 100% against UV and carry a CE mark. Polarised sunglasses are designed to break down glare and will not only protect but give you more comfortable vision on bright days.
